LTAD: Stage 2 Tennis Program 1

The “Workouts” in the following Program is ideally integrated as part of a Tennis practice session, either at the start of the session as an active warm up, or at the end. The “WorkIn’s” can be homework assignments for the athlete to do at home by themselves or with a parent.

The primary objective of Stage 2: Movement Tasks is to establish the foundational movement tasks required in a sport. Through analysis of a given sport, we can identify the individual Movement Tasks and then couple these Movement Tasks with the Biomotor Abilities to enhance specific attributes. Typically this stage is reserved for children before the age of puberty. It can also be considered as part of an offseason for more seasoned athletes or as part of a Wet Weather program.

Primary Movement Tasks in Tennis:
We identify 3 Primary Movement Tasks categories to be successful at the sport of Tennis:
Gait
Level Change
Racquet Skills

We define Gait as locomoting on foot. In tennis, running, shuffling, hopping, bounding, and cross steps are the primary forms of Gait we would consider developing for Stage 2.

Level Change is the vertical displacement of the body. In Tennis, we highlight Squatting, Jumping, and Lunging.

Racquet Skills summarizes the various tennis skills required to hit the ball including Swinging, Striking, Reaching which are all done in a variety of ways.

We will combine these Movement Tasks with the Biomotor Abilities most needed at this stage of development
